WWBA presents the fourth installation of its 2017 program Salut au Monde. Named after Whitman’s poem, this series aims to bring the world to the Whitman stage. Insider/Outsider Poetry Recital by Multilingual Students will be held on October 25, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Award-winning educator Barbara Suter has organized three sessions for this program, which is tailored specifically for intermediate/advanced English language learners (ELL). The program will examine the question of who is an insider and an outsider in our nation.
First, the 11th grade Hicksville High school students will read Whitman’s poem “Salut au Monde” and deconstruct its language and style. The students will then confer with teachers to draw upon experiences and moments evoked by the poem. They will write their own poetry, which they will finally present to an audience of their peers and family, as well as members of the public.
Insider/Outsider allows the ELL students to develop and “own” their writing voices in English. It also provides them an opportunity to be recognized as part of the diverse voices that Whitman celebrates in his poem.
Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The event is accessible to those with physical disabilities.
