Birthday Celebration Weekend featuring Poet-in-Residence Marilyn Hacker, children’s book author Karen Karbiener, and Whitman Personator Darrel Blaine Ford”.

WWBA’s 2017 Poet-in-Residence, Marilyn Hacker, will offer an afternoon workshop and an evening reading on Saturday, June 3rd.
Sunday, June 4th, is an award celebration of the annual student poetry writing contest. Hacker will officiate the award ceremony along with Karen Karbiener, who will read from her newly published anthology, Poetry for Kids: Walt Whitman, Whitman’s verse for children. Karbiener will offer a book signing afterwards.

Intimate three-hour Master Class with Marilyn Hacker featuring in-class writing and discussion. *Registration is required. Please bring your own pen/pad writing instruments.

  • Marilyn Hacker will address the audience and officiate at the Young Poets Award Ceremony.
  • Elected officials will greet the crowd.
  • NYU Professor and Whitman scholar Karen Karbiener will lead a discussion of Whitman’s poetry for children (ages 8-13), and a reading and signing of her new book, Poetry for Kids: Walt Whitman.
  • Meet with Darrel Blaine Ford, Whitman Personator and enjoy 19th century era music by Mary Nagin.
