The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association is committed to welcoming audiences that reflect the diversity of Huntington, NY. Volunteers are a key partner in this mission, helping create an inclusive environment where everyone can connect with the poetry, art and history of Walt Whitman. We encourage people from all backgrounds and life experiences to apply to volunteer. No experience is required, and training is offered for all positions.
Positions available:
Volunteer Docent
- Learn the Birthplace house tour. Guide our visitors in one-hour tours as well as brief, informal chats with the goal of making Walt Whitman relevant, meaningful, and inspiring
- Offer excellent customer service while answering visitors inquires, delivering accurate directions to Museum
- Provide information about the Museum, its programs, exhibitions, show times, etc.
Volunteer Gardeners
- Participate in planting, seeding, and other activities to support the beautiful greenery of the Garden
*Minimum of 2 docent shifts a month
Summer Hours (starting June 15th)
Monday – Friday 11am-4pm
Saturday/Sunday 11am-4pm
Winter Hours (starting Labor Day)
Wednesday – Friday 1pm-4pm
Saturday/Sunday 11am-4pm
Closed on: Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day
