Join us at the Walt Whitman Birthplace on May 30, 2025, for an unforgettable afternoon with world-renowned poet and 2025 Poet in Residence, Marilyn Chin. Known for her powerful explorations of cultural identity, assimilation, feminism, language, and heritage, Chin’s poetry has left a lasting impact on contemporary literature.
In this interactive class, we shall read parts of Whitman’s “Song of Myself” out loud to soak in the sonic and imagistic beauty of this famous poem.
We will also read parts of other long-line ecstatic verses that inspired or were inspired by Whitman’s work. After our community reading, we shall take out our magical pen-and-paper and write a few verses ourselves.
Born in Hong Kong, Marilyn Chin is the author of six acclaimed poetry collections and a novel. Her accolades include the 2020 Ruth Lilly Prize in Poetry, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award, and a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship. Currently, she serves as a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and resides in San Diego.
