Each of the programs below includes a guided tour of the Walt Whitman Birthplace. Each Program is available virtually.

These interactive virtual celebrations allow children to see each other and stay connected while enjoying a fun activity together. They can sing happy birthday together or individually say hi to all their friends. Parents & Grandparents are welcome to watch. This is a wonderful, memorable way for children to be interactive outside of school, learn history, and create their own masterpieces together!

How was Vincent van Gogh inspired by Walt Whitman? Children can join an interactive art party while learning the answer to this question and more!
Children will learn the history and inspirations of one chosen artist: Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Mattise, or Georgia O’Keefe. They will also create their own artwork guided by an experienced art & history teacher.

Learn the history of afternoon tea and table etiquette and practice your social skills to build the confidence you need to work the room at this fun and informative program. Make the connection between present and past while setting the table for a traditional tea party and preparing place cards. Learn cellphone etiquette and how to make personal introductions that leave a lasting impression.

Create your own floral lilac paintings with acrylic paints after learning about one of Walt Whitman’s best-known poems, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.”
Supplies not included.
Materials to be supplied by participant: Basic acrylic paint set and an 9×12” canvas for each child., a variety of flat and round acrylic brushes and a piece of paper, water.

Create pinch pots of your own after learning about pottery made during the 19th century on Long Island. See authentic pieces of pottery and learn their unique and little-known history!

Meet a published poet! Discuss how a poet finds inspiration to write a poem. All are encouraged to let their imagination and creativity soar through actually writing poetry and sharing it with the group. Participants will have fun while building awareness of language and enhancing their comprehension skills.

With a knowledgeable interpreter, tour an authentically furnished 19th century farmhouse, Walt Whitman Birthplace, home of America’s greatest poet. See the room in which he was born. In the Interpretive Center, view the exhibits and hear a recording of Walt’s voice reading his poem, America.
